Four members of Eastern's Management faculty visited Hungary in November, 2001. Dr. Norb Elbert (Chair of the Department of Management, Marketing, and Administrative Communication) and Professors of Management Dr. Bill Davig, Dr. Allen Engle, and Dr. Mike Roberson arrived in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday, November 2. Their Hungarian host was Dr. József Poór, Managing Director of the HayGroup HR consulting firm and a faculty member at the University of Pécs.
While in Budapest, the group met with HayGroup consultants in a roundtable format and discussed a variety of topics, including international business and compensation management. The Hungarian consultants were also quite interested in gaining a first-hand understanding of how the American people and the American business community were reacting to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
After several days in Budapest, the four
traveled to Pécs -- a three hour train ride south-southwest of Budapest.
Pécs is a charming, university town and is the home of the University
of Pécs, a comprehensive university with over 25,000 students.
Drs. Elbert, Davig, Engle, and Roberson each made presentations at an international
business conference hosted by the university, and the group also taught
two classes in the English language business program offered by the College
of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs. The gentlemen
then journeyed back to Budapest for a day before heading home on the morning
of November 11.
Partnership Agreement Signed
A notable accomplishment of the trip was the signing of a partnership agreement between Eastern Kentucky University's College of Business and Technology and the College of Business and Economics at the University of Pécs. The agreement calls for a faculty exchange that will enrich both universities and the faculty members who participate. Special thanks are owed to our friend, Jóe Poór, for serving as the liaison between EKU and Pécs in facilitating the agreement. Dr. Bill Davig will become the first of Eastern's faculty members to teach in Hungary under the new agreement, and he is tentatively scheduled to do so in Fall of 2002.
Below and on the pages that follow are some pictures taken during the trip. Included are shots of both the professional parts of the trip as well as some of the opportunities the group had to enjoy the sights, culture, and food of Hungary. Our faculty members report that there were many professionally enriching and stimulating aspects of their trip, and they believe that this initial trip signaled the beginning of a relationship with the Univerisity of Pécs that can provide great benefits for Eastern and can be a mutually rewarding one for many years to come.
